Rose's Reign Update

February's Version

Greeting! The last month has been pretty productive, if I do have to say so myself. I’ve accomplished a decent amount in the first draft for Rose’s Reign, and I’m excited to say that the story is unfolding much better than I could have thought.

Back in 2020 after Rose’s Wrath was published, I first began to work on Rose’s Reign. That draft burnt out about four chapters in because the story just didn’t feel right. Most of you probably don’t know, but Rose’s Reign was supposed to have an additional POV. A princess named Isha. However, it seemed too odd to introduce someone new what felt to be so late in the story. She was a lot of fun to write, but I worried that readers just wouldn’t connect with someone that they hadn’t gotten a chance to see beforehand. So, for the time being, she is cut out of the story. Depending on how people react, though, I might put her chapter as a little bonus one when it comes time to publish.

The current draft sits right around 12,500 words and I am pleased with the story progression so far. As I mentioned in my previous newsletter, the story is plotted out to run about 40 chapters and 80,000 words. So, we’re about 15% of the way through! This is one of the most heavily plotted stories I’ve written yet. Normally, I have a couple notes and then the rest I just wing it. In fact, Rose’s Ruin was written exactly like that.

I’ve never been a plotter, much to my own downfall. Too much plotting sucks away my creativity, but just enough helps to keep me pushing through even if there isn’t a ton of in-the-moment-inspo. That’s where Rose’s Reign has fallen and it actually has helped to give me new & fresh ideas this time around, too.

I published my first book at the age of eighteen and I knew practically nothing except that I wanted to share my story with the world. My formatting was terrible, my dialogue stiff, but the heart of the story was still there. I’m happy to say that I’ve improved and I think this latest story will reflect that.

Well, thanks for sticking around! I’m trying out a new newsletter format, so let me know what you think!
